He's 8 Years Old. He Wrote His Own Story.

Most books about kids like mine are written about them. This one was written by him.

My son Titan is eight years old. He's autistic. And this year, he became a published author — not because someone handed him a story to read, but because he wrote his own.

It started with a question. One ordinary day, I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. He looked at me and said, "I could be a firefighter." Simple. Certain. No hesitation. And something about the way he said it — the way he already believed it — stopped me. I started asking him about all the other things he could do. His answers kept coming, one after another, full of a confidence I wish more grown-ups had.

That conversation became a book. We called it "I Can."

Every page is Titan's own words. Not polished up. Not rewritten by an adult who thought they knew better. His. On one page, he calls himself a young king — and every time I read it, it stops me. He just believes it, all the way down. On another page, he talks about math. Math was hard for Titan. Really hard. But his page says:

There's a page about being brave, too. He defines it better than most adults could:

He wrote that after doing a zip line he was terrified of, on his birthday.

That's the whole heart of it. Titan isn't a kid a book gets written about. He's a kid who had something to say, and said it.

The book we wrote back

Watching him do this changed how I see my own role as a parent. So his mother and I wrote a book too — a companion to his, called "He Can: Love, Patience and a Crown." It mirrors his page for page. Where his book says what he believes about himself, ours tells the story behind it — the patience, the hard days, the small victories, the faith that carried us. It opens with a blessing we hold close, the one from Numbers 6:24–26: "The Lord bless you and keep you…"

His book is the crown. Ours is the story of everyone who held it up.

The two are meant to be read together — a child's voice and a parent's, side by side. We haven't seen another set quite like it.

Titan's World

The books are the beginning of something we're calling Titan's World. Next comes the "I AM" series — illustrated adventures where Titan lives out his dreams, starting with I AM a Firefighter (yes, the same firefighter from that first conversation). His mom is illustrating them herself.

We're a Columbus, Ohio family, and we're building this the only way we know how: true. Every word in these books is real and specific to Titan. When we didn't have a real story for a page, we left it out rather than make one up. Authenticity isn't a marketing choice for us — it's the whole point. This is his story.

He's eight years old. He wrote his own story.

And he's just getting started.
